everything in its place...

life isn't perfect...and i don't ever recommend trying to attain perfection...i will gently point out...however...that one of the most luxurious feelings of all is to sit in the midst of a clean and uncluttered room...surveying a neat and tidy scene...
or better yet...a clean and uncluttered closet...

such as this beauty...i can only dream of such a room...

i am always intrigued with celebrity closets...remember these that instyle.com posted? yes...i drool...click for celebrity star closets - part 1 and celebrity star closets - part 2 to see the fabulous closets of the stars...

it is easier to feel regal when all around you is neat and organized...and the fact is that most of us have to get it that way ourselves...which has been my ongoing project as of late...

the closet...and although mine is not as spacious as the celebrity closets...it is bigger than some i've seen...and smaller than others...but i need to work with what i have...

i can't exactly be telling my clients to go through their items...when i'm not doing the same...so all the little posts i do...the suggestions i make...i follow...and not always willingly... =) i also...sometimes hold on to an item...or two...or three (hey...i'm human) longer than i should...

the good thing...is going through the motions...although overwhelming at times...creates a cleansing...not only in the closet...but within myself...

this isn't about perfection...but i do strive to have as many moments as i can when i can look around and think...yes...it all looks under control...

there is true luxury in order...

love me some cashmere...

when it comes to fashion...my first love always...will be shoes...i am seriously thinking that will never change...and i have a closet full to prove it...and second?? well...it would have to be my love for cashmere...

this soft, luxury fiber is among the worthiest indulgences in a wardrobe...cashmere has the cachet of quality and lasts for years...and it is for this reason...that it is quite possible to accumulate a cashmere collection over time...now my cashmere collection is not as vast as my shoe collection...but i do have a lovely array of color in cashmere...

so what should you consider when buying cashmere? it is all about the density and ply...look for a sweater that has heft and feels substantial...there are many one-ply cashmeres that are lovely...two-ply are simply sublime...and then the three- and four-ply are almost sinful...but oh so luxurious...be on the lookout for show-through...which usually indicates a poor-quality weave...

and the absolute worst thing that could happen to your fabulous collection of cashmere would be the first sighting of a tiny hole...so take care of your luxuries with a little bit of rosemary...

cashmere requires simple care...wash in plenty of lukewarm water with mild detergent or baby shampoo...gently squeeze the sweater rather than scrub...rinse in several washes of cool water until the water runs clear...roll up in a towel to absorb excess moisture...lay flat, block, and dry away from excessive heat...touch up with a warm iron, with your sweater turned inside-out...

men's corner: what style say you?

men...are you modern, trendy or updated traditional?

modern = your taste is current, but not flashy. your clothing makes a statement, but a subtle one. you always look polished, even when you don’t have to...

updated traditional = you like to look good, but don't let clothes get in your way. you appreciate quality, value and function. you take the basics and make them your own...

trendy = you like fashion, and you're not afraid to admit it. you see clothing as another visual medium — like art, architecture or film. so why not get creative?

i came across this lovely quiz from nordstrom.com to help you out!

tom julian who wrote a lovely book entitled "nordstrom guide to men's style" says the following...

"it's probably not hard to get you talking about your car, your phone, your home, or your golf clubs...for some reason though, many men have difficulty articulating when asked to describe their style...style is like fingerprints - no two people's are the same..

style can be hard to discuss and define, probably because great style involves a certain degree of effortlessness...but think of it this way: style is everywhere - in the cars we drive, in the music we listen to, in the phones we use...so when thought of as a series of design choices, not fashion for fashion's sake, style isn't intimidating at all...in fact, many of us derive pleasure from the latest new thing, whether it's an HDTV or a new pair of sneakers - and you can get that same kick from building your wardrobe...

it may be easier to think of style as lifestyle - not just the way you approach your clothes, but also the way you approach everything else...applying your life philosophy to the way you dress integrates your personality into your clothing and enables you to effortlessly adapt the contents of your closet from work to play to weekend."

well said tom julian!

so...do you know what style you are? take the quiz...and let me know...and as always...if you need help getting outfits together...i am here to help... =) it is what i do!

styles as listed in "nordstrom guide to men's style"

luxury = you enjoy being well put together. you appreciate the tradition, skill, and craftmanship involved in making and wearing tailored clothing. quality is important to you - you want to build a head-to-toe wardrobe that will last. you want to look good without your clothes shouting "look at me!" your clothing choices portray a quiet confidence...

classic = your wardrobe is a collection of great staples. you think about clothes in terms of what they can do for you. you don't want your clothing to get in your way. you appreciate quality, value, and function. you take the basics and make them your own...

contemporary = you have a modern approach to fashion, expressing your own personal style through your wardrobe - but you never say anything too off-the-wall. you want to be current but not flashy...

trend = you like fashion and you're not afraid to admit it. fashion is just another visual medium - like art or architecture or film - so why not stay on top of things? you are able to make edgy fashion choices look easy, hip, and cool. you're skilled at translating the runway into real life...

sweaters...

the original "sweater" was a thick wool blanket used by stablehands at the end of the nineteenth century to make racehorses perspire during training exercises...

draped over the likes of lana turner...

known as the "sweater" girl...

and grace kelly...it induced perspiration in a decidely different population...

sweaters are infinitely flexible....they can be thick and woolly...warming men and women alike on snowy winter weekends...

or, as coco chanel discovered...they can be feminine and subdued...like the cashmere twin-set you substitute for a suit jacket...changing your look from hard power to soft sophistication...

beaded sweaters and cashmeres with exquisite buttons say luxury...and have shown up at elegant evening parties and fashionable resorts for decades...paired with dress-up fabrics like chiffon, satin and silk taffeta...

isn't this one a charmer?? found in fast eddie's retro rags... i love its simplicity...AND it is still available...if you are a sz small... i would check out the whole site...as there are a lot of lovely vintage sweaters...and so much more...

and then there are the everyday sweaters made from cotton, linen, wool and fleece...which serve a remarkable range of activities...from tea with grandma to trekking in the dolomites...

but just as i feel your good china should be used more often than just for that once a year "special" occasion...same with your sweaters...pull out the cashmere...the beaded sweaters...and pair it with your favorite jeans...instant chic!
