you know you're from burlingame and ysl...

for those of you on facebook...you might recall the popular page called "you know you're from __________ (insert your city)...which for me is burlingame, ca...it is a fun page in that random people post memories of things they remember while growing up in their individual cities...you may not know the person who is posting their memory...but it sure brings back things and places that one might have forgotten about...and in that...a good time of remembering is started...

a few weeks back...a friend that i actually went to school with (from kindergarten all the way through high school)...seriously...how often does that happen? ken (my friend) posted this picture with the following remarks...

You know You're from Burlingame if..."you had the hottest Kindergarten teacher in the Burlingame School district..Miss Low from Washington. Sadly, this picture doesn't have her black go go boots from story time."

of course...i laughed at the remark...i am sad to report...that i do not recall miss low's black go go boots... =)

used by permission of little girl in pic...now all grown up!

but what was so cool...was that from this remark...several started commenting on the picture...two remarks stood out to me...both from men (which makes it even more fabulous!)

creighton commented: That's a Mondrian dress on the right? Art as fashion.

christopher commented: My first thought as well, Creighton

and christopher was kind enough to include this link...for those who at this point might not have any idea as to what they were talking about...

to which i myself commented: wow...loving the fashion updates...and that the mondrian dress was brought up...quite impressive! =)

christopher then commented: I saw the original up at the De Young's Yves St. Laurent exhibit...

now that was a fabulous exhibit...here is a pic i took from that show (courtesy of my yves saint laurent book that i got at the exhibit...

how cool would that be if the little girl in the picture still had this dress?

"mondrian is purity and one can go no further in purity in painting. this is a purity that joins with that of the bauhaus. the masterpiece of the twentieth century is a mondrian" yves saint laurent, quoted by laurence benaim

top shoes trends of spring 2010...

my favorite fashion subject...shoes...the nice thing about this spring 2010 season is that there really is something for everyone...from lovely flats to the highest of heels...so let's get started...

flats continue to be ever present this season...and so many choices to choose from...look for printed fabrics, bright colors, zippered detail or embellishments to spruce up the look...
tory burch "reva" straw flat

oxfords...known as the street smart shoe have always been around...but they are back now with interesting details...you can find them with heels or flats...brogue or plain...

clogs are back! all it took was for good ole karl lagerfeld to show them in the chanel spring 2010 line...and they have resurfaced...

wedges are definately a great look to pair with your sundresses & shorts...the thicker heel is much more comfortable but still gives you height...

platforms are still standing strong (yes...my heart is leaping) and you can find them in an array of beautiful colors...

peep toe booties...yes...for spring...these are everywhere...in so many adorable styles...

a few others that deserve honorable mention are nude pumps and sandals...for sandals...think gladiator, heavier feel, embellishments...and color...

so which styles are you looking forward to wearing?

puttin' on the tux...

men always fuss about dressing up, (well...not all...but most...) yet they look so delicious in tuxedos...and...most women love a man in a tux...so why not skip hearing them fuss...and wear a tuxedo yourself? you are certain to look fabulous, too...and feel like a sexy woman of mystery and intrigue...

how can you find a men's tux that fits? well you probably won't...every so often a designer such as yves st. laurent or ralph lauren will come out with a high-priced tux outfit for women...

but i think a better bet is to find yourself an oversized vintage tuxedo in a resale shop and take it to a tailor...have it cut down to fit your own curves perfectly...and accessorize to your heart's content...don't stop at the tuxedo itself...find some elegant cufflinks to wear and a jazzy silk cumberbund to wrap around your waist...perhaps wear a flouncy skirt or silk blouse to make the outfit more feminine looking...

and by all means...don't forget...wearing one piece at a time jazzes up a casual outfit to perfection...

what is haute couture?

earlier this year...i got a chance to see the yves st laurent exhibit at the de young museum in san francisco...actually i went three times...yes...it was THAT spectacular...

the de young museum was fortunate to have the only u.s. showing of the yves st laurent retrospective...the exhibition featured nearly 130 of the designer's works from 1962 to 2002...

can you imagine?? nearly 130 outfits (complete with stunning accessories and shoes) were featured, many of which were haute couture worn by well-known icons, such as nan kempner and catherine deneuve...

an explanation of haute couture was featured as part of the exhibit - i found it informative and thought you might also...

In France, the term haute couture is protected by law and is defined by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris. Their rules state that only "those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves" of the label haute couture. The criteria for haute couture were established in 1945 and updated in 1992.

To earn the right to call itself a couture house and to use the term haute couture in its advertising and any other way, members of the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris must follow these rules:

-Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings.
-Have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full-time.
-Each season (i.e., twice a year), present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs with outfits for both daytime wear and evening wear.

The term haute couture may have been misused by ready-to-wear brands since the late 1980s, so that its true meaning may have become blurred with that of prêt-à-porter (the French term for ready-to-wear fashion) in the public perception. Every haute couture house also markets prêt-à-porter collections, which typically deliver a higher return on investment than their custom clothing. In fact, much of the haute couture displayed at fashion shows today is rarely sold; it is created to enhance the prestige of the house. Falling revenues have forced a few couture houses to abandon their less profitable couture division and concentrate solely on the less prestigious prêt-à-porter.
