are you a collector?

this was the caption on a j crew ad that i saw...and when you turn the page...you see an array of different colored flats...the ad goes on to say that they (j crew) have 20 styles...48 colors...pretty impressive...

so...to answer the question...i would have to say...yes...i am a collector...as i started to think of all the lovely ballet flats i have in my closet...but this gives me something to work towards...i don't think i have 20 different styles...and for sure i don't have them in 48 colors...

are you a collector? dare to list your number? =)

spring/summer 2012 trend: pleats

so many beautiful trends for spring/summer 2012...i thought i would start listing some of them for you...and show ways in which they could be incorporated into your wardrobe...

pleats...think accordian...and they are everywhere! the most common is a 50's inspired pleated skirt...and while that is a great way to incorporate it into your wardrobe...some women will shy away from it...as the hip area is the one place they are not looking to bring attention to...

here is a nice example of one...where the pleats start below the hips...so...emphasis is off the hips...

catherine malandrino pleated maxi skirt
nordstrom.com

a nice pleated design in a bathing suit...that little bit of extra detail...so lady like and feminine...

betsey johnson 'french pastry' skirted one piece swimsuit
nordstrom.com

a maxi dress is always a fun way to look put together...without really trying to hard...

but don't stop here...as you will find pleating in blouses...jackets...a clutch purse...shoes...all you need to decide is how little or how much pleating you want...

is this a trend you are thinking of trying?

put together: ladylike...

while perusing my april issue of harper's bazaar...in between sips of java...i come to this absolute beauty...completely not sure if this "had me at hello" or just a very "put together" outfit...i couldn't decide which category to place it under...

but then i thought...who cares about the category? because this outfit is "right" on so many levels...and yes...i know it is green...my obsession...but it is more then that...so fifties inspired...i can hear my mom's voice telling me how i was born in the wrong era... =)

beyond the green...beyond the perfection of the dress...and the handbag...and the shoes...even the hair! are you possibly getting that i am absolutely loving this look?

more then anything...i love how ladylike one can look...with very few pieces...

men's corner: details...

i am always on the lookout for details in men's clothing...let's face it...when it comes to clothing...men don't have as many options as women...but there is still a way to make your wardrobe reflect you and your personal style...

for my men clients...and guy friends...i am always talking about the little details...a small detail in a coat...for example...can be the difference between plain and pretty fabulous...

when i saw this ad for burberry prorsum in the april issue of vogue...i was delighted...how gorgeous is the little tangerine tango trim...the color of the year by pantone...i might add...

details...a little goes a long way...start looking at your wardrobe...from your socks...to your shirts...to your sports jackets...when shopping...are you looking for those small details that will set your wardrobe apart from others...

what your shoes say about you...

and interesting article caught my eye in the march issue of instyle magazine...all about shoes...is there any doubt why it would catch my attention? the article was titled..."what's your shoe personality?" if anything...click on over to see all the fabulous spring shoes that are available...

have you ever wondered what your shoes say about you? whether you are wearing flats or heels...shoes speak volumes...even if you are not a shoe girl...as long as your shoes are in tip top shape...who wants an outfit to be ruined by scuffed up shoes...am i right?

so the different types the article listed were...

my shoes say...

"just try to ignore me..."

"i love the classics..."

"check out these legs..."

"i like to stay grounded..."

"i'm the boss..."

"i don't take no for an answer..."

how many categories do you fall under? are there categories that were missed and clearly should be added? please share...

green & yellow...

my closest friends would say that my favorite color is green...it is usually what i gravitate towards...the truth is...i gravitate towards color...the brighter...the better...in the past...my favorite green combination was always...green & pink...made me think of spring...

but lately...i've been seeing a lot of green & yellow combinations...and i have to say...it is really getting my attention...now...if you are like me...and can't wear a certain color...especially around your face...there are ways of working in color that you love...but can't wear...

for me that color would be yellow...not the best choice for me...washes me out...so...how i would fix that problem? perhaps finding a colored pair of pastel yellow jeans...emphasis on the pastel...because i'm not needing bright yellow attention on my back side... =) just saying...or perhaps a pair of green & yellow espadrilles?

i like this combination of green dress & yellow jacket...but for me...i would flip it...and wear the green closer to my face...or on the outside...don't discount a color or trend that you gravitate to...but think of ways of incorporating it in...but in subtle ways...

bally

this nice yellow handbag with green embellishments is pretty fabulous...no? whatever your poison...look at pictures for inspiration...for color ideas...and then start working it in your wardrobe...baby steps...

prada

if green & yellow doesn't do it for you...pick a combination that does...orange & pink...green & blue...the options are limitless...but so fun to create...what would your winning color combination be? and how would you work it into your wardrobe?

a look on the bright side...

being a rather dreary...grey...rainy day...all i am wanting is some color...some vibrancy...some "happy"...and then i spotted a great pair of compact doubleweave pants...at ann taylor of all places...to say that i have been a bit obsessed with colored jeans...well...would be an understatement...but then when i spotted these...i thought...why stop at just jeans?

these are fabulous...a nice cropped pant...with a nice amount of stretch to them...so...i'm figuring there are two ways to wear this...rather demure...or go all out...

demure would be...possibly with a neutral blouse or sweater...and a nice pair of pumps...but...could you just imagine this with a eye-popping blouse? like...hmmm...a gorgeous red?? i could picture it in my mind...not sure if i would go that bright...on myself that is...yes...even i have my limits...not because i don't think the combination would be fabulous...just not the right combination for me...

which would you choose? demure...all out...or...none of the above?

guess that would be three ways...

l'odyssée de cartier...

i have always been intrigued by cartier advertisements and such...and don't even get me started on the exhibit i saw in san francisco a while back...just stunning...then my girlfriend sent me this cartier link...and well...i can't get enough...

i just keep watching it over and over...so brilliantly done...and the bracelet...the one at the end? j'adore...

you had me at hello: tux & stripes...

ok really? how fabulous does this jacket look? a nice spin for a tuxedo jacket...AND with stripes...

as i was getting my mail today...i quickly flipped through my town & country magazine april issue...and as always...there is that one item that...has me at hello...and this issue...just happens to be this lovely...

of course...i'm dreaming big to have a giorgio armani jacket in my closet...but i like the idea of this...which means...i need to keep my eyes peeled while vintage shopping...i'm sure i can find something that will come close to this...right?

kate middleton goes green...

as if i couldn't adore kate middleton more...with her absolutely unique personal style...and poise...my girlfriend sent me this article from the huffington post... "kate middleton consignment dress: the duchess goes thrifting, apparently"...

apparently a dress she had worn by the label jesire...which had gone defunct...so upon further investigation...come to find out...that it was most likely purchased at a consignment store...

tre chic...no?

consignment store shopping & thrifting has become quite the acceptable mode of shopping...where once it was considered taboo...or not mentioned...but now...going green is the thing to do...with all the celebrities getting on board...it has become quite a "cool" way to shop...

finding that unique one-of-a-kind piece...the reason why i have been shopping consignment and thrifting long before it became so popular...it was truly about the hunt...but much more then that...it was and is the way to find absolutely unique pieces...

do you have a favorite consignment and/or thrift store that you frequent? and if you have found an unbelievable treasure...please do share!

put together: the little white dress...

while most women will gravitate to the little black dress...simple...and instant chic...the little white dress has been making quite the statement...

as seen here on nicole richie in the march issue of california style magazine...wearing a max mara dress & tom ford clutch...seriously...you don't need much else to look very put together...

what to do with the "not right for me" pieces...

so you've done the hard work of purging your closet...maybe you did it by yourself...with a girlfriend...or hired a professional to help you out...doesn't matter how you did it...but that you did!

but now you are looking at your pile of "get rid of" items...and you are going through some guilt...not because you are getting rid of it...but maybe because you know that the pieces are still in great condition...or that you paid a pretty penny for it...or that it is a great designer brand...

whatever the reason...not everything necessarily needs to go directly to the donation center...although those places are great...and need donations...when you have some pieces that are...well...in a higher category...there are other options...and options that might possibly reap you a small reward...think of it as a reward for cleaning out the closet...

one possibility is to have a swap party...if you've never done one...they can be loads of fun...and your discarded items may just be the perfect item that one of your friends is looking for...and some of your friends may bring some items that are perfect for you...a complete win win...and the fact that you are helping the environment...a bigger plus!

a swap party can be done on your own...just don't overwhelm yourself...invite the number of friends that you can accomodate...and put a maximum on the number each person can bring...(you don't want someone showing up with 45 items) or maybe you do...you know what you can handle...come to think of it...i may do a swap party tutorial blog post next week...so stay tuned for more details...

and if the idea of a swap party excites you...but you don't want to handle it yourself...look to hire a wardrobe consultant that will facilitate it for you...they are out there...believe me...

if the swap party is not your idea of fun...look into consignment stores to sell your items...but be picky about where you take your items...go to several places...check out how they price items...to get a feel for what you could get in profit...most consignment stores offer a 60/40 or 50/50 split...nothing better then dropping off some items...and receiving a check in the mail a month or two later...again...think of it as a reward for cleaning out that closet...

or if you've got the time...try selling your items on ebay...it takes some time...photographing & listing the item...but the profit is all yours (less ebay & paypal fees)

so don't feel bad about that pile of beautiful clothing that you know in your heart is not right for you...let it go...and with your rewards...get some pieces that are right for you...

so...what have you done with your high-end discarded items?
