you had me at hello: links and tassels...

so last week while i was getting my hair done...i was flipping through the "o" magazine...and just as it always happens...when i find that "you had me at hello" piece...i turned the page...and there it was...these "you had me at hello" pieces truly do make me stop...and stare...for longer then normal...

side note: yes...there are a few magazines that i do not subscribe to...my mailman thanks me...i'm sure...

well...wouldn't you know that happened in this july issue of "o" magazine...a beautiful piece that has two of my favorite things...links and tassels...and bonus...when in gold...

doesn't it look vintage? i.must.have.this.in.my.collection... do you think that wills it to happen? sure hope so...this is a piece that would go with SO much...with just enough personality...

this trina turk art deco inspired necklace definately had me at hello...

the lone striped blouse that hung alone...

one of the rules challenges that i give myself when shopping...is that every piece i buy...must be able to be worn at least two different ways...what does this do? well for one...it gets you wearing your pieces more often...which in turn is then considered a fabulous investment...

so...of course...it must not come as a big surprise...that i try to instill this in my clients as well...clothes that are hanging in your closet...no matter how beautiful...are horrible investments if they continue to hang in your closet...right?

so...when i first met my client mindy...i have to say...i loved what i saw in her closet...she had wonderful pieces...and together...we figured out more ways that she could wear those pieces...then the one way she had originally bought the pieces for...

one blouse that i pulled out of her closet caught my eye...i asked her what she wore it with...and she said she had nothing for it...well...that is the kind of challenge that i like...AND on a side note...mindy loved mixing patterns (something i absolutely adore!)

so i told her i would find something for her to go with the gorgeous blouse which was a mix of silver grey & navy blue stripes...we had originally talked about getting a grey or navy pencil skirt for it...which...of course would have been perfect...

so here is the blouse...sorry for the coloring...it is much more vibrant in real life =)

while shopping for mindy...i came across this skirt...so fabulous! and i thought...could it possibly go with the wonderful blouse? so i picked it up for mindy...here is the result...for those that do not like the whole mixing patterns...stay tuned...

close-up of the patterns...

and here are the different ways that mindy is now wearing this skirt...topped with a crisp white blouse...

for a more casual look...a white t-shirt is perfect!

and even a chambray shirt works...

now that is what i call a fabulous investment...

palazzo pants...

the ultimate party pants...palazzo pants became popular in the 1930's...when they were also known as beach pajamas and worn with a loose top over a swimsuit...they have a comfortable feel that can be casual or dressy...depending on fabric and accessories...

the best part...they feel like you are wearing your pajama's...but you don't look like you are wearing pajama's...so stylish and chic...

in metallic silk with a cashmere sweater and a scarf...the look is cool...understated evening...in cotton or linen with a t-shirt and a pair of sandals...it's pure summer...

how do you wear your palazzo pants?

working towards your goal...

as a wardrobe consultant...a common scenario that i see...over and over...is someone wanting to lose that last 15 pounds before buying anything new...what ends up happening...usually...is that the person ends up wearing clothes that are too big...or too tight...

so what can you do?

whether it's 20 pounds or 5 pounds...it seems all of us are reluctant to invest in our wardrobes until we're at the 'perfect' weight...

the problem is...clothing alterations can only accommodate so much poundage...at which point...you end up wearing garments that really don't fit you well...and here's the really bad part of that situation...you end up looking BIGGER than you really are because your clothes don't fit properly...

and really...who wants that?

so i have a couple of suggestions for you:

*if you are in the situation i described above...you NEED to purchase at least one staple outfit that fits you NOW(whether it's a suit, pants suit, or coordinated separates.) as you lose the remaining weight at least you'll be looking sharp...and when you reach your goal weight...then alterations can be made and your investment won't have gone to waste...

*if you have that staple outfit that is your 'go to' while you're losing those last pounds...there's an easy way to update your look: a new top, sweater or accessory...these items are more adaptable to weight changes...and can give an instant "pop" to your style...

there is really no reason why you should look any other way other then fabulous...even when working towards your ideal weight...

men's corner: taking the plunge...

it seems that swimwear for men is getting shorter...are you ready for that? while most men are still pretty modest or perhaps less secure about the midriff...mr ronen jehezkel of parke & ronen...a swimwear store in chelsea, ny...brought up a good point in an article in the ny times last month..."a lifeguard for before you get to the beach"

"They don't want to try on the shorter trunks because they're too revealing, and I tell them, 'What, you think those long board shorts hide your belly?' Most guys, even if they're fat, their legs look good. Why not show those? Sure, we have the long board shorts, but they're cut very narrow, for the 'spaghettini', the tall, thin guys with skinny legs. You can't put them in the short trunks - it looks like a cheerleader skirt."

the popular swim trunk seems to be reminiscent of the old gym shorts...remember those? the vintage sports references seem familiar...but fortunately...the old gym-short feature of the elastic waistband is long gone...

bottom line...it is summer...pick a great color or print...and have fun...

size doesn't matter...

there are moments when we throw up our hands and shake our heads in defeat...these times often occur while we leaf through fashion magazines full of perfect bodies in perfect clothes...we know those women are airbrushed...but somehow that doesn't make us feel any better...

then again...there are the other times when we catch a glimpse of ourselves looking fabulous...we are amazed...others comment on our radiance...and chances are...we are wearing something that makes sense...for our body...consciously or unconsciously...we have considered which parts need the spotlight...and which ones would be better off left backstage...we've pulled a few other tricks out of the bag as well...standing a little straighter...touching up our makeup...and fixing our hair...but the bottom line is that we know we look great...and that's a good feeling...

my hope is that more women feel like the latter...unfortunately...most don't...whether it is because of that last 10 lbs...or maybe you are an average women in the sz 12 to 14 category...

size.does.not.matter...

really...

clothes are not your enemy...in fact...they could be the missing key...at any size...and really...at any budget...if you buy the clothes that are right for your body type...there is a bigger chance of feeling like the latter...really...

need some help with that? a stylist can help...and ultimately save you money...by helping you buy the things that are right for you...for your body...

summer colors...

happy summer solstice! longest day of the year & official first day of summer!

intense sunlight + saturated color = summer

think of sherbet, mangoes, and the candy-colored houses of the tropics...the vibrant tones of summer sparkle in sunlight...they make us smile...whether we wear hot pink as an accessory to show off a tan...or a pool-blue suit to cool us off in the heat of july...

we can wear summer colors as an accent or the main event...but they are...like the season that inspires them...bright...relaxed...and above all...fun...

the lilly pulitzer designs to me...scream summer...vibrant colors with unique combination...it started in 1959...at a family fruit stand in florida...lilly pulitzer was a society wife with too much time on her hands...she took to designing simple sleeveless shifts...with her dressmaker...from colorful flowered material and selling them alongside the grapefruits and oranges...a rage was born...lilly pulitzer's wild floral prints defined the palm beach look of the 1960's and have been collected for years by women all over...including the young jackie kennedy...after a hiatus during the 1980's...lilly pulitzer dresses returned to the racks in the mid-nineties...in time to cash in on the latest celebration of fifties and sixties nostalgia...

you had me at hello: i salute you...

i have been obsessed with getting a bold officers jacket for a long long time...but most of the ones i see...are just not right...well...this month...as i do every month...i'm flipping through my 10+ fashion mags...and i come across this gem...

hello...

my scanned pic below does not do it justice...it is a beautiful vibrant red...don't you just love the tiny rounded gold buttons? and...of course...the perfect amount of gold trim at the collar and sleeves...my hopes would be to find a vintage officers jacket...but i'm in no rush...these things take time...

this beauty...by ralph lauren...is very very close to what i am looking for...and although i have not seen it in person...you had me at hello...

men's corner: it's all about the "sweet" tie...

father's day is slowly approaching...are you leaning towards a tie for dad? i have to say...that was not the usual gift i gave my dad...although it seems to be the one a lot of people gravitate to...

matt...over at tiepedia sent me this post on "tie" birthday cakes...i posted pics of my favorite two...but take a look at the rest...pretty creative...but more then that...check out matt's blog...he is a self-proclaimed "obsessed with ties" kind of guy...how many of those are around? personally...i think that is pretty fabulous...

here is his snipet on "not your ordinary father's day ties"

It may surprise some of you to hear what I am about to say, but it must be said. Not all guys want a tie on Father's Day. GASP! I know, I know, it sounds crazy... and I certainly am not one of those guys, but apparently it's true.

Listen to what Joseph Hurtado has to say, "there are only two types of men: those who hate ties, and those who grudgingly accept them as part of the job."

Blasphemy as far as I am concerned, but if you're Mrs. Hurtado you may want to think twice about getting Joseph a tie for Father's Day. How about baking him a delicious necktie cake instead? I don't think many men could resist that. Here are some sweet examples for you to consider! (Congrats to the cake artists who created these!)

thanks for sharing this matt! and happy father's day to you!

grace kelly surprise...

back in april i was really wishing to be in london...i have admired grace kelly for soooooooooooo long...and to imagine walking through an exhibit of hers...well...there are no words...truly...

so imagine my jealousy err...excitement...when my good friend (and business partner) adena told me she was going to london... =) all kidding aside...i truly was very excited for her...and couldn't wait for her to tell me all about it...

so adena gets home...and her world wind traveling continues...she is off on another trip...but before that...i needed to drop some client orders off at her house...i knew she wouldn't be home...and as i'm walking up the walkway...what do i see at the door?

can she be any sweeter?

an addition to my coffee table book addiction... =)

grace kelly style

i won't tell you how many times i have looked through this book...you may think i need to get a life...here are some pics from the book...

here is a little snipet that adena wrote about her visit on her fb page...i keep telling her she needs to start a blog...but if you are on facebook...do follow her...she has some great posts on fashion...

Style with grace - by Adena

Grace Kelly that is. As a long-time fan of Grace Kelly, I so enjoyed seeing the exhibit of many of her beautiful outfits at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London recently. She embodied the essence of style, simplicity, and elegance - both as an actress and in her subsequent life as Princess. The exhibit features not only her beautiful dresses, but also her trademark white gloves and a few of her purses and shoes. Her 5' 6 and 1/2" height was problematic for her in initially landing roles, and she admitted that her greatest beauty problem was in managing her weight; however, Edith Head once remarked that she had a waist that was "much too small" (what a problem!) In viewing her gowns, it was apparent how very slim she was - although she wore a size 10 dress (then, the smallest size usually sold.)

One of my favorite gowns is one that wasn't in the exhibition - an Edith Head-designed gown she wore in "Rear Window" - a movie classic for many reasons, not the least of which is the lovely clothes she wore throughout the movie as a young woman working in the fashion industry.

If you haven't had the opportunity to see this movie, please rent it - it's true entertainment (before the age of digital enhancement!)

In addition to Grace, my other style icons include Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Onassis and Princess Diana. Who are yours?

creating your own shoe...

have you ever been there? couldn't find the perfect pair of shoes for that almost perfect outfit? i have to admit...i have never had a problem finding shoes...in fact...most times...i buy the shoes...and then create an outfit around them...makes perfect sense to me...

but i have to say...i was pretty intrigued when i first heard about envy couture...which was founded in 2006 by annabel leung...imagine...creating a shoe that meets your individual taste...you can basically design your own shoe...what are the decisions you need to make?
- style
- heel height
- leather
- fabric
- size
- heel finish

here is a snipet from the website:
"Annabel Leung, founder of Envy Couture studied at Goldsmiths College, the London College of Fashion and is the label's designer.

Taking her inspiration from London, Paris and Hong Kong, her collections feature a variety of high fashion and classic designs which are customised for each client and individually handmade to order.

Annabel always wanted to design shoes. She wanted to create visions of beauty combined with the highest standard of craftsmanship. Annabel herself has small feet and her initial idea was founded on the fact that she found it impossible to buy beautiful shoes which made her feel feminine and that expressed her personality."

so is this something you would try? does the idea of creating your own shoe intrique you?

sum...sum...summertime...

since i just sent out my june newsletter...i thought i would insert an excerpt from it for my fabulous blog readers...it is all about summer time!

as a kid...the thought of summertime can conjure up seemingly endless days of playing outdoors...a vacation with the family...softball games...bbq's...or maybe days at the beach...(or if you're from the east...days 'down the shore'.) somewhere in our lives...we gals start to view one aspect of summertime with dread - the day we will don our swimsuit...and not only the day we have to appear in public in that suit...but also the whole process of shopping for it...(i mean...truly...couldn't they put some flattering light and mirrors in those dressing rooms?!)

well...take heart...it doesn't have to be a torture for you...first of all...it helps going in if you have a little swimwear shopping savvy...

sss tip #1
first of all...forget about numbers...the size, that is...no one will see the size but you...and the important thing is that the suit fit properly...to show off your best assets...if it bothers you...cut out the tag after you purchase...

sss tip #2
you probably have a pretty good idea about your body 'shape', i.e. round, rectangle, triangle, inverted triangle, hourglass...that being said...you should look for suits that will emphasize your most attractive assets while minimizing those areas you're not so fond of...

for example...if you want to camouflage your midriff...a suit with ruching will help...in addition...this particular suit...with it's wide-set straps...draws the eye upward...emphasizing the upper chest and shoulders...(i have this suit in a fabulous teal...and i absolutely love it!)

the vertical ruffle on this suit helps to slim the body...

if your shape is a triangle (heavier on the bottom)...you can focus attention on the upper body with a printed tankini top and solid color bottom...

if you want to emphasize (or create) a waistline...a suit with detailing at the waist will do the trick...

check out the swimsuit section on the Nordstrom website - you can look at suits according to your body type...gotta love that!

sss tip #3
think about the fabric and your planned activity before you purchase...for example...if you're planning on spending time in the water...avoid crocheted or loosely-knitted suits because they sag and lose their shape when wet...

sss tip #4
get a tan...no, not in the sun but out of a bottle...we all look better in a swimsuit when our skin is a bit tanned...whether it's a spray-on (mystic and versatan systems are two good ones...i especially like versatan because it dries you off after the 'liquid tan' is sprayed on...minimizes streaking.) or a lotion (again, my favorite is loreal sublime bronze...gives a good color and doesn't smell bad...be sure to wash your hands well afterwards or...as i do...wear latex gloves to apply.)

fashion funnies: you have to try it...

one of my lovely readers sent me this yesterday after they read my post on scarves...

scarves...

one of the easiest accessories...a scarf can pack a big punch...giving new life to your existing wardrobe...and the best part...it is truly the easiest way to experiment with color...pattern...and texture...

scarves can hide flaws...attract attention...replace a necklace and frame your face...

tied long and loose...it can create a slimming silhousette...

rolled...it can belt your pants...cut large...it can cover a skimpy bikini bottom...

if nothing else...it will add the unexpected...

men's corner: the "mandal"

ok...i don't know why...but i am not a big fan of sandals for men...apparently now being called the "mandal"...and even more...not a fan of birkenstock...but apparently it is all the rage now...reading an article in the ny times...news flash...even macho toes like to breathe...

as shown in the pic below...fashion shows are sporting them as well...this one from dsquared2 in milan...

so men...what do you wear for summer? do you bring your toes out of hiding? and if so...what is your comfort zone?

as i realize it is not all about me...and my hate err...dislike for sandals for men is not relevant...if you are going to go that route...a nicely manicured foot is still in order...just saying...

change is difficult...

there are times when my job brings me great pleasure...these feelings are usually around making someone see the best that they can look...a lot of times...women (and men) fall into a rut...or are stuck...and cannot see the potential...

what i have found...is that no matter the size...almost everyone has something in their head that triggers emotions about certain body types or parts...

clients come in with preconceived ideas of what is right for them...sometimes they are right...but most times...well...a little help is needed...it still amazes me at times how some women (and men) become so set in their ways...hearing that at one time...something may have looked great on them...and they stay in that "look" years later...sometimes ten or twenty years later...or they are afraid to try something new...

this is usually the scene...

as i talk to clients...many of them have fears...and i reassure each of them that i will make them look their best...as the fittings begin...i watch as they gravitate to what they are "used" to wearing...the struggle at times is to put them in new colors, new styles, new looks...

they are stubborn...but...i am pretty firm...because i know that in the end...if i could just get them in the right outfits...they will see it & more importantly...feel different...

one by one...they come in...and give me excuses as to why an outfit will or will not work...and one by one...i tell them..."just try it on"...as they timidly walk into the dressing rooms...the transformations begin...

one by one...they come out of the dressing room...and you could see it on their faces...as they looked at themselves in the full length mirror...

clothes are incredible when used properly...when fit properly...they are able to make one look more vibrant, thinner, taller...the list is endless...if you know how to work the clothes...

client praise: aimee...

i'd be lying if i said this doesn't warm my heart...it thrills me to help women look their best...no matter what stage of life they are at...and aimee was no exception...

and as if this note wasn't enough...she posted the most wonderful "review" on my facebook business page...AND gave me 5 stars...

"Hiring Elena as my personal shopper and fashion consultant was one of the best investments I have made! As a new Mom, my work and casual wardrobes needed to be recreated. I didn’t have the time or desire to do the shopping myself, so Elena took care of everything. She came to my house, audited my closet, and guided me on what I needed to make my wardrobe complete with basics and pop pieces. Elena did all the shopping and brought the clothes to me for fittings. Her knowledge of the current retail inventory and willingness to find great items for a discounted price enabled me to have a fabulous brand new wardrobe for a great price. In the end she saved me money! Last but not least, Elena sold my old clothes online… She is amazing!"

and THAT is why i love to do what i do...i think some have the idea in their head that a wardrobe consultant means the results that you see on "what not to wear" with the lovely stacy and clinton...we waltz in and throw everything out...in reality...it is about coordinating what you have...what works for your lifestyle as well as body type...and filling in the pieces...

thanks aimee...you were a joy to work with!

knowing your lifestyle...

do you have a closet full of clothes...and still stand at the door hearing yourself say...over and over...i don't have a thing to wear? what i have found with clients that had too many clothes that didn't work...is that the clothes in the closet...do not match the lifestyle of the individual...please don't get me wrong...there are other reasons as well...clothes that don't fit...clothes that don't complete an outfit...but this is one reason that should be addressed...

if you have had a lifestyle change and haven't made the time to bring your closet up to speed to reflect this change...the clothes will not match the lifestyle...for example...when i worked for corporate america...you would usually find me traveling three weeks out of the month...and i was always in suits...and i was always out with clients...which meant that...

a. i didn't have a lot of time in between for trips to the dry cleaners
b. i was in a suit pretty much from morning till evening...five days a week...

so...my closet consisted of alot of suits...and little black dresses for the fancier client soirees...

when i left corporate america...and started on my own business...and working from home...my suits were just hanging in the closet...this was a major lifestyle change for me...and although i have kept a number of my suits...had i not updated my wardrobe to now reflect my wardrobe consulting business...i would also be standing in front of my closet door saying..."i have nothing to wear..."

so what are lifestyle changes? for instance...if you used to leave the house five days a week in a suit or dress but are now working from home...raising children...or in retirement...don't waste prime closet space on suits you never wear...on the other hand...if you work outside the home full-time and just got promoted (or would like to be...) and need to step up your wardrobe a notch to help you project a stronger on-the-job presence...you probably can let go of many of your overly casual items that are cluttering your closet and won't help you preoject an air of authority on your job...

the best way of figuring out if your closet matches your lifestyle...is by determining what percentage of every area of your life is...a simple graph would include the following:
- business
- dressed-up casual
- all-out casual
- special occasion

list a percentage for each category...totaling 100%...the percentages listed should match the amount of clothes you own in each category...

i had a client who went on a hike about two times a year...yet she had a "hiking" wardrobe of t-shirts, hiking shorts, hiking boots that would make one think she was hiking every other day...it took up WAY too much space that should be alotted for the true lifestyle that she lives...

beige...

it often surprises me when i hear someone saying that they don't know how to wear beige...or what to wear with it...it is a neutral...so...pretty much...anything goes...

it is the ability of beige to blend in...that has made the color popular with spies and safari buffs...beige never makes a fuss...it camouflages...stays neutral...lets other colors take the limelight...

it has been said that beige is the black of the south...though such regional distinctions in fashion are beginning to blur...

beige is...subdued...quiet...sophisticated...yet friendly...
beige is for long-haul classics...not big splashes...

so whether you choose to wear beige in similar tones...which creates elongated lines...or add color for flair...beige is a neutral that every closet should have...

fashion funnies: maxine's advice on jeans...

gotta love maxine's "tell it like it is" philosophy... =)

may your saturday be fabulous!

Friday, June 4, 2010

that which lies beneath...

the thrill is knowing that...under an old pair of jeans and a comfortable sweater...you have on the kind of satin and frills usually reserved for antique dolls...or...more likely....the harlots of the house of the rising sun...

maybe you're the only one who knows...maybe you've let someone else in on the secret...it's expensive...but you can't put a price on desire...each piece must feel luxurious against the skin...so fabric is key...it must be expertly designed to both fit and flatter...

the long-overdue innovation was using stretch lace and other new fabrics to combine support with sexy and feminine styling...

lingerie...ultimately...it must be ready to seduce...you are probably not buying french teddies to cook in....and as any designer can tell you...seduction is in the details...

underneath of all things usually hidden from the naked eye...what slips between you and your outerwear ranks among the most alluring...but underwear...is not to be underestimated...

it has everything to do with the clothes that cover it...it shapes our bodies so that we can fit into tiny-waisted ball gowns and second-skin dresses...it may scathe us in satin, lace, or cotton...making us feel warm...or confident...or pretty...or seductive...

at times...our underwear is our outerwear....we let the whole world see us in our drawers...other times...we're more private...we might let one special person peek beneath the layers...

start to build your underwear wardrobe with basic colors...white, black, nude...fit and fabric make all the difference...spend time finding the right size and cut...make sure leg holes and waist don't cut into your body...think about usage...underwear that looks the prettiest on its own often looks lumpy under clothes...

men's corner: spanx for men...

i knew that it would just be a matter of time before the big ole "spanx" revolution would jump over to the men's corner...i mean really...isn't it all about looking your best?

the misconception for a long time was that shapewear (for women) was only worn by those who were...well...a little over the weight they would like to be...but truth be told...women that are size 2's swear by there spanx...it isn't about your size...it is about shaping...creating a smooth supportive surface for your clothes to look their best on you...

so...yesterday...in the ny times...an article caught my eye...men's 'shapewear' is a retail hit...seems online sales are a bit higher...as men are still a little shy about the purchase...but i for one...am thrilled to hear that men...just like women...are looking to look their best...

so men...if you are interested...you can find your very own spanx for men at neiman marcus...and this month...they will also be offered at nordstrom, saks fifth ave & bloomingdales...or you can go directly to freshpair.com
